Such a presentation provides an effect of a very special kind. But the narration takes place after the fact. Up to this point, Odysseus has narrated his deeds and boasted of his prowess to the willing king Alcinoos. Odysseus' amazing experiences between the fall of Troy and his awakening on the island of Ithaca give way to a more pressing problem : to establish order in his kingdom. Yet, in the final analysis, it is at home that he faces the greatest confrontation of his existence.īook XIII of Homer's epic marks the transition from the realm of adventure to the realm of reality.
